Online Operator Algebras Seminar
Title: The structure and classification theory of Fell bundles
Speaker: Stefan Wagner (BTH – Sweden)

Abstract: A common approach for unravelling the structure of an algebra is to impose a grading on it. This provides a decomposition into homogeneous components, which are subspaces of the algebra itself but can also be studied as distinct entities. To put it differently, starting from a graded algebra, one can view its homogeneous components as the parts remaining after decomposing the algebra along its grading. Examining these components individually can provide valuable insights into the algebra’s structure, revealing aspects that might otherwise remain hidden.
A particularly significant concept in this context is that of Fell bundles, introduced by Fell to address the decomposition of C*-algebras. Since their introduction, Fell bundles have become central to the fields of operator algebras, noncommutative geometry, and mathematical physics, serving as a versatile framework for studying group representations, as well as C*-dynamical systems and their associated crossed products.
In collaboration with Natã Machado (UFSC), we aim to further develop the structure theory of Fell bundles, with a particular focus on establishing a suitable classification framework. In this talk, I will introduce Fell bundles, discuss their fundamental properties, and present key findings from our research (see arXiv:2501.14472).
